I just got off a clarity call that perfectly sums up where the design world is heading.

The person I spoke with had used one of those crowdsourced logo websites in the past, the kind where hundreds of designers compete to win your project. It worked out pretty well for him years ago. He got about 150 submissions, sifted through them, and found a logo that fit.

This time around? He decided to try again.

Except now, with AI everywhere, things looked a little different.

He received over 3,000 submissions.

That’s not a typo.

Three. Thousand.

More Doesn’t Mean Better

At first, that sounds exciting, thousands of options to choose from!

But as he opened file after file, the excitement quickly faded.

Every logo he saw looked… off.

Misspelled words. Distorted shapes. Fonts that didn’t belong in the same zip code.

Most were clearly AI-generated mockups, created in seconds by someone chasing a payout rather than crafting a brand identity. After scrolling through page after page of half-baked designs, he gave up.

He didn’t even make it to the end.

Instead, he closed the site and started looking for actual graphic designers: people who could listen, understand his business, and create something with meaning behind it.

Design Isn’t Just Decoration

I’ve been a designer for over 15 years… long before templates, generators, and auto-prompts started promising “instant branding.”

What I’ve learned is that real design starts with listening.

It’s about understanding what makes a business unique… its values, its voice, its story… and then translating that into something visual, intentional, and lasting.

A great logo doesn’t come from randomness or volume; it comes from strategy.

It’s built around psychology, proportion, typography, and meaning. Those details don’t just “look nice”, they make your brand recognizable and trustworthy.

The Hidden Cost of Cheap Design

Crowdsourced platforms (and now, AI-powered ones) sell the illusion of abundance: “Look how many options you get for $99!”

But what you actually get is noise, thousands of logos that could belong to anyone.

The real cost isn’t financial; it’s what you lose in the process:

  • Time, spent sorting through unusable designs
  • Clarity, because nothing feels right
  • Momentum, because your brand still doesn’t represent you

By the time most business owners reach out to me, they’re exhausted. They’ve tried the quick fixes, and now they’re ready for a process that feels thoughtful, guided, and human.

Where AI Fits (and Where It Doesn’t)

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-AI.

I use it sometimes for brainstorming and inspiration.

But it’s a tool, not a substitute for creative direction.

AI can’t interpret tone. It doesn’t understand nuance. It doesn’t notice that the curve of your icon feels too corporate for your wellness brand, or that your serif font subconsciously evokes tradition when your audience craves innovation.

That’s the work of a designer, not a data model.

The Future of Design Is Still Human

As AI floods the creative space, the role of a designer isn’t disappearing, it’s evolving.

Now, more than ever, clients need someone who can bridge creativity with clarity. Someone who can filter the noise, translate your story, and design with strategy, not speed.

If you’re ready for a logo (and brand) that doesn’t just look good, but actually means something, you’re in the right place.
