What to ask before you invest your time and money

If you’ve ever hired a “designer,” paid the invoice, and then watched your inbox go quiet while your site sits half-finished… you are not alone. I hear this story weekly. It’s frustrating, it’s expensive, and it makes it harder to trust the next person.

As a trusted Ottawa and Toronto web designer, I’ve met many clients who came to me after being burned. The good news: you can absolutely protect yourself. Here’s what to ask before you sign anything.

1. Proof over pretty

A glossy Instagram grid is not a portfolio, it’s a highlight reel. You want receipts.

Ask:

  • Do you have live websites I can view?
  • Can I read reviews or speak to clients in Ottawa or Toronto?
  • Which platforms do you specialise in (WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace)? Why those?

A trustworthy designer shows real work and explains exactly how each site solved a business problem.

2. Do they have a graphic design background?

Great code is useless if the page layout makes your eyes twitch. Formal training in graphic design affects everything: composition, balance, visual hierarchy, colour, and typography. That’s the difference between “it works” and “this feels like my brand.”

Ask:

  • What’s your background in design?
  • Do you also do branding or logo design?
  • How will you make sure the visuals align with my brand across the whole site?

A strong design foundation makes your website feel cohesive, polished, and professional.

3. What is the process and how will we communicate?

Most horror stories start with “we didn’t have a clear process.”

Ask:

  • What are the stages from discovery to launch?
  • How do we share feedback and approvals?
  • How often will I get updates?

A professional Ottawa or Toronto website designer can walk you through their process in plain language so you always know what’s next.

4. Who owns what? (Hint: you should.)

Your domain, hosting, and content should be in your name. Always.

Ask:

  • Will I have full access to my site, hosting, and analytics after launch?
  • Whose name will the domain and hosting be under?
  • If I move platforms or providers later, what does that look like?

You should never be locked out of your own business assets. If access feels fuzzy, that’s a red flag.

5. What exactly is included… and what isn’t?

Clarity now prevents awkward money chats later.

Ask:

  • What’s included in the proposal and timeline?
  • What counts as an extra and how is it billed?
  • Is SEO setup or post-launch support included?

A clear scope means no surprises and no mystery invoices.

6. Maintenance and support after launch

Websites are living things. They need care.

Ask:

  • Do you offer maintenance or update packages?
  • Will I get tutorials or Loom videos for simple edits?
  • How do you handle plugin or software updates?

The right partner sets you up to grow, not to panic every time something updates.

7. Look for transparency and real rapport

Pay attention to your first conversations.

Do they listen, ask smart questions, and respect your goals? Or are they pushing a package that doesn’t fit?

Working with a designer should feel collaborative. As a female-owned web design studio serving Ottawa, Toronto, and beyond, I build websites rooted in story, strategy, and trust. That approach is why so many clients feel relieved after rough past experiences and why I’ve earned 70+ five-star reviews.

Hiring a web designer should feel exciting, not risky.

Ask these questions, trust your gut, and choose the partner who treats your business like it matters… because it does.
If you’re looking for a web designer in Ottawa or Toronto who blends strategy, storytelling, and strong graphic design, I’d love to help.
